UPDATE 8/5 9:33 AM – NOTE FROM GROUND ZERO IN FAYETTEVILLE: they have DEAD dogs in the trucks. They are shooting the dogs on the spot, any dog that wont ” come ” they dont temperment test them or anything they just kill them on the spot and load them in the truck. Then they do the write up in the paper that says “all the dogs will be given three days in the shelter and will be temperment tested” they are mostly pits that they kill.
Mims Wildlife Control has been hired to round up approximately 150 dogs in Fayetteville, NC. Animal Control Director (Cumberland County) John Lauby who is overseeing this has repeatedly described the dogs as a threat, and says they create a risk for a rabies epidemic. Clearly John Lauby is the one creating the hype about a rabies epidemic. He says that concerns about rabies started when allegedly homeless dogs attacked a fox and some raccoons. And despite the fact that the rabies testing on the dead fox and raccoons were inconclusive he has gone forward with this roundup.
John Lauby doesn’t have the best interest of the animals at heart or he wouldn’t make the untrue and very ignorant statement that “Feral dogs are not like pets that you and I know,” he said. “They are like wild lions and tigers; they are very dangerous.” While he acknowledges that some dogs who get caught up in the sweep could be pets and turn out to be adoptable. He said “All the dogs will be assessed before they are euthanized. All dogs brought to the shelter are kept for three days by law. We’re going to give that dog a chance,” he said, “but no dog is going to be adopted from our shelter that’s going to be a danger or a potential danger to our citizens. I won’t let that happen.” Then he goes on to say “most of the trapped dogs likely will be euthanized at Animal Control after their capture, but some could be saved and re-socialized.”
There are consistent whispers of BSL in Fayetteville and surrounding areas. It is clear to me that they are using rabies as an excuse to execute all the homeless dogs in their area including the pit bulls. Few if any of these dogs stand a chance!
Call to Action:
Contact Wayne Pacelle of Humane Society of the United States through his FB page here and ask why they are not stepping in to help these dogs? ALSO EMAIL: pballard@humanesociety.org; stwining@humanesociety.org;

Repeatedly Contact the joke of an Animal Care Control officer John Lauby at ccac@co.cumberland.nc.us or call 910-321-6852. Also, the Board of Commissioners at web.commissioners@co.cumberland.nc.us
If they truly do not want to unnecessarily kill any dog then why have they not hired trained professionals to assess each dog?
Why are they only holding the dogs for three days, this is not enough time for evaluation?
All of the dogs deserve a complete evaluation by real professionals. Some of them, at least, should have a shot at being rehabilitated and becoming pets again; that three days may not be enough time to make that decision; and that, with the possibility of 150 dogs being hastily executed in Fayetteville, some animal welfare group, however unwelcome they might be, should be stepping in!
